You might be surprised to learn that many people take cake decorating quite seriously. If you are like most people, you probably think of it as an activity that is better suited for your grandmother. But you would be wrong. Among cooking professionals, cake decorating – also known as one of the sugar arts – is well respected and admired as a true skill and art. Here is some information on the its background.

Cake Decorating – An Edible Art

Why are cakes decorated? They are decorated for two basic reasons: to increase the aesthetic and decorative appeal of the cake, as well as to complement or improve the taste and texture of the cake. Decorating is more often considered as a means of improving the visual appeal of the cake, and some master decorators have elevated it to a high edible art. This art can do a lot to improve the appeal and impression of the cake.

A Short History of Cake Decorating

The special edible art of cake decorating can be traced back to the mid-17th century. The art appears to have roots in Europe during this period, especially in the northwestern provinces of Europe. It quickly spread in popularity, and is now a popular edible art throughout many parts of the world, including North America, South America, Australia and New Zealand. Of course, some of the world’s most respected decorators and cooking institutes continue to thrive throughout Europe.

Different Styles in the Sugar Arts

There are various different methods in the sugar arts. But there are several basic techniques that are shared by all decorators and decorating styles. Most decorating involves using icing or other kinds of decorative sugars, including chocolates and candies, to decorate. Cake decorating, however, can be as simple as sprinkling it with iced sugar or decorative sprinkles, or adding a glossy sweet glaze to the cake. All of these are basic examples of different methods. However, the art can also be much more complicated than this.

Common Motifs in Cake Decorating

There are many common motifs that are frequently found in the sugar art of cake decorating. Some of the most common motifs include flowers made of icing; decorative icing borders, fondant, marzipan figures and flowers, molding gum paste decorative borders, and glazes.

The Lambeth Method

This is a traditional method that uses an over piping technique. It is a complicated technique that uses royal icing piping on cakes covered in fondant. Then, on tops of this, decorative lacework is added to the curtain-like effect. Other hallmarks of the Lambeth Method include scallops, scrolls and string work.

The Australian Method

This is another common technique, commonly referred to as the Australian Method, that also employ the use of royal icing piping on an intricate curtain and lacework.

The Wilton Method

The Wilton Method is another popular style. This style focuses on butter cream icing. Butter cream icing is used to cover the entire cake, and it is also used for decorative touches and flourishes such as flowers and simple to very intricate designs and decorations. The Wilton Method has quickly become one of the more popular methods because it allows even beginners to advance through different stages of design. The Wilton Method can move from basic decorative techniques (Level I of the Wilton Method, to flower patterns and borders (Level II), to rolled fondant and tiered techniques (Level III), and up to customized designs.

The World’s Best Art Consultancy

art-exchange.com unveils Release III of its art tool for designers

The Future Art Consultancy

Locating and placing artwork in a design project is arguably the most difficult part of the project. While some designers take on this task themselves, many enlist the assistance of an art consultant. One limitation of this approach is the consultant’s limited universe of artists. Most art consultants end up with a few “go-to” favorites.

Imagine an art consultancy able to directly access 10,000 artists, with technology capabilities aggregating art choices in a portfolio for emailing or high-resolution printing for presentations. Add the ability to correspond with clients via e-postcard including selected images. And finish with the ability to access framing options online thus enabling the designer to actually show the customer how the pieces will look framed.

Does It Work?

Can a website help you find art? Art-Exchange (www.art-exchange.com) is not a new website, not a new service, not a new company. It does, however, take a new approach to providing art to designers. And it has a new site design that Art-Exchange claims will make the service even more powerful and easier to use.

I spoke with Richard Gipe, President and CEO of Art-Exchange, to find out why he thinks his company’s service is so special. I asked him, “If you had to communicate Art-Exchange’s value to designers in a single sentence, what would you say?”

Here’s what he said: “If you want to access as much art as we have on Art-Exchange, you would have to go to 20,000 galleries, and you would have to deal with so many different sellers that the logistics would be overwhelming.” That sounds pretty good. But does the site work?

About Art-Exchange

Art-Exchange is a business service provider that specializes in solutions for the design trade. They can offer solutions to designers as an art consultancy, or they can provide solutions to art consultants to help them be more effective and efficient.

For the past five years Art-Exchange has been actively contacting artists to list their works on the exchange. Today there are approximately 100,000 different works of art created by over 10,000 different artists. Imagine searching 100,000 records to locate the perfect art solution. Nearly 60% of all the works are originals, and the remaining 40% is a variety of editions. All of these works are organized in a database, and a search engine locates works using any or all of the following criteria:

• Artist’s name

• Title

• Subject matter

• Style

• Medium

• Size

• Colors

• Price

• Orientation

Suppose you need oversized original works and price is an issue. Maybe you want only works with lighthouses. Or perhaps you need large public works. That’s how specific the search engine can be. And with the new design, if you enter several criteria and the search engine can’t find a work that matches all your criteria exactly, it will refer you to the works that match your criteria most closely, so that you don’t have to start over. As one of the new site’s designers said, “We don’t ever want to show nobody anything.”

Normally, designers hire an art consultant or visit multiple galleries or view print books to find the perfect art solution. That’s the old way of finding art. Now designers can look in one place and view tens of thousands of originals alone. This is the new way of finding art. Art-Exchange let’s designers search for all the art they need in one place. That alone has the potential to save time, but the website has some other very powerful features that give designers even more flexibility and power.

Powerful Features

One very important new feature is the Designer Portal. Art-Exchange has four different portals that members can use to enter the site. There’s one for retail clients, one for community partners, and another for artists and other sellers. But the Designer Portal is available only to designers. Once you enter the portal, you can search for the art you want, view images of the art, and immediately see designers’ wholesale pricing.

Here’s another great new feature: Portfolios. How do you keep track of the works that fit your client’s needs? You keep a portfolio. Designers can set up portfolios for individual clients, different locations, or just for future reference. It’s easy to save works to custom-made portfolios. And it’s easy to show the portfolio to clients—from anywhere in the world.

Another terrific feature is the Exhibitions section. Exhibitions include the works of around 200 artists and are compiled topically. Prior exhibitions, which are still accessible, include Realism, Landscape, Watercolor, and Impressionism. In order to have fresh ideas readily available for clients, designers need to be reviewing art all the time, and these exhibitions can help. It takes only fifteen minutes to view an entire exhibition.

Another feature that can help designers and clients work together—especially when clients have trouble describing their interests—is the Postcard feature. Clients can go to the website to browse for themselves. They can view an exhibition, browse by artist, or do a search. When they find something they like, they can send images to their designer using electronic postcards.

Soon, Art-Exchange will even offer the ability to create Custom Frames online so that clients can view the artwork in different frames and choose the one they like best.

Full-Service Art Consultancy

Art-Exchange goes far beyond just the website, however. They also provide full-service art consultancy. They have a full staff of qualified art consultants who can do as much or as little as a designer wants them to. Anything a typical art consultancy does, Art-Exchange will do. If a designer works with an art consultant already and wants to maintain that relationship, Art-Exchange will even work with his or her current art consultant.

How to Access the Features and Benefits of Art-Exchange

Go to www.art-exchange.com and visit the Designer Portal. Log in as a designer and learn about how the service works. You can easily search for art, access their full-service art consultancy, or guide your favorite art consultant to Art-Exchange. A subscription is free. Art-Exchange is paid by the sellers on completed transactions; so they only get paid if they’re helping designers find the right art, for the right job, at the right price.

When asked what he would most want to communicate to designers about the company and the service it provides, Gipe said, “I want the members of ASID who place art to try the art consultancy service at Art-Exchange, and if they’ll give us 10% of their trust, we’ll earn the other 90%.” If you’re a designer or an art consultant, it’s worth trying. Does it work? Is it really whole new way of finding art? Yeah, that’s what it is. And for designers, the world of art will never be the same.

Edwin Mah asked:

Have you ever been at the clinic, waiting for your turn to see the doctor, and all you see on the walls around you are posters on cancer prevention, reminders for you to do your annual medical checkups, dealing with rheumatism in old age, diabetes… the list goes on. All around us, we’re flooded with uncomfortable images and messages that remind us that we really need to take good care of our health. Although these posters are there for a reason – to inform and educate, they certainly add an unwelcome addition because they inject an element of fear into all of us. Here we are, waiting to see the doctor, worried sick that our illness could get worse, and all we see in front of us are images and information about illnesses and disease. We really don’t need these at this time. Tell us these things when we’re well, not when we’re sick.

Having been a patient myself (and who hasn’t), the waiting area at the doctor’s office is quite a stressful place to be. As you’re waiting for your turn to see the doctor, your mind is full of apprehension and uncertainty as to what the diagnosis might be. The last thing you want is to be bombarded with images and media detailing out a plethora of possible ailments you could be diagnosed with. It just adds to the stress.

Strip this entire media off the walls, I say. Remove every shred of evidence that this place is a clinic. Patients don’t need reminders as to why they’re there. Put in its place decorative art work. Surround the walls with art and beauty. Put some framed pictures on the assistant’s counter top. Having a beautiful piece of art to look at will certainly make your wait a lot more pleasant and take your thoughts away from all things unpleasant. Art may also accelerate the healing process. This is the reason why some hospitals have beautiful art hung on its walls. This is what the patient really needs.

What kind of art to display, you might ask. Well, apart from movie or music posters, because they hardly seem appropriate, almost any other kind of art will do. A good choice would be abstract art. Pick something that has soft, pastel colors that calms the mind when looked upon. Abstract, or contemporary art, doesn’t represent anything in its true form, but rather it is an abstract representation of it. Much of it is left for the user to interpret what it’s all about. This will certainly keep the patients busy as they wait their turn. Abstract art will give the place a nice contemporary feel and make it seem less like a clinic and more like an art gallery.

There are many choices of abstract art to choose from. Prints of abstract flowers will add a nice, warm touch to the office. What about black and white abstracts? This will create an interesting contrast with the colors around it. You could also display abstract art of other genres, like collages, geometric abstracts, abstract landscapes and abstract figures, among others. The choices are plentiful. If you’re not into contemporary art, why not use pictures of animals? A picture of a cute kitten or puppy can do wonders to encourage healing and comfort. If you can’t keep a real pet in the doctor’s office, then display a picture of one. The effect may not be the same, but it certainly is nice to look at and takes a great deal of stress off the patient.
