here is an idea to try. I have been doing alot of projects with material. go to your nearest fabric store or a retail store that has fabric and see if there is a design you might like to use. measure how tall the column is and the distance around it and get the material. then wrap the column and where the seam will be hide it by using straight pins or just let it blend to its self. be creative and have fun..

Replace it with one you like.
Or be creative and make a project out of it.
Paint it a light color, then look for designs you like and add them up and down, like grass at bottom and sky upper and butterflies around it.
Add lights to it.
Hang a partial set of doorway beads around it.
Maybe put a wallpaper border around it at intervals, or just around the top.
Go to a junk antique store and find objects to attach to it.
I like that barber pole concept. You can go many ways with the "nostalgia influence," because of that old timey yesteryear warmth thing that reminds us all of a different feel good era.

You won't be able to hide it much by making it bigger but you may be able to have it appear to disappear. Paint it a brown/black. You will be making a void, a space that is not obvious. Good luck!

paint it in red and white stripes like a barber pole. It will make an interesting novelty.

Depending on how big the column is they have colums that will fit over plain columns and give it more style to your room. Check with Home Depot and Lowes they should be able to help you
